My Granny

Over the years, my sweet Granny, one of my best friends, has left me dozens of voicemails that capture the essence of who she is and the depth of our relationship. Through these messages, she shares what matters most to her—her faith, the temple, family, and the beauty of nature.

I’ve been blessed to learn from her, witnessing her life, her grace, her unwavering faith, and her deep devotion to family. She is truly one of the loves of my life, and I will cherish these messages forever.

A few things that make me think of Gran,

  • Song: “Where Love Is” – Granny mentioned how, when Grandpa was sick, he would sing “Where God Is.”
  • Roses, tomatoes, and hunting for snails in the rain – Always in her red rubber boots or clogs.
  • Fruit salad - She enjoys eating healthy and eats lots of fruits to tame her sweet tooth.
  • Furs – Granny often brings me fur mittens from her trips to Europe. She wears fur coats and keeps a fox fur draped over her bed or chair.
  • Rolls and peach jam - Ask anyone who's ever had Granny's rolls and they'll tell you they are to die for.
  • Judy Garland & Rosemary Clooney - We share a love for music from the ’50s and ’60s, often singing Judy Garland songs together in the kitchen or while out for drives.
  • Pewter - Gran has a collection of pewter dinning ware that we use for holidays.
  • Oil paintings - Her love for art is innate and inspired her to take oil painting classes. She paints flowers and still life.
  • Aprons – When I lived with Gran as a little girl, she always wore an apron while making breakfast, her specialty was oatmeal. I would sneak to tie it to her chair, thinking I was clever.
  • The Temple – Granny has worked at the temple for decades and always speaks about her love for the Lord.
  • Morning Walks - As a little girl, I would wake up every morning to find Granny gone on her morning walks. I would sit by the front door, sometimes waiting for over an hour, anxiously watching out the window for her to come home.
  • Bike Rides up Provo Canyon - Granny is 86 years old and still taking her bike up the canyon, iconic.
  • A Deal! - This one makes me laugh, but Granny is constantly on the hunt for a bargain.
  • European Tours - Gran has always appreciated the finer things in life, including grand tours all over Europe. Every time she travels, she brings me back a rock or leaf—something I always asked for as a little girl. Now, I have cases full of trinkets and treasures from all over the world, all thanks to Granny.

Granny, art, and technology. An interesting combo.
